1) An explanation of the reservation process for the Ducati 996R
Thank you for your interest in the 996R and in our new method of connecting Ducati enthusiasts to Ducati Dealers worldwide via www.ducati.com. The following will help you to understand the 996R Reservation Application process and final delivery of the motorcycle.

2) The main steps of the Reservation Application process:
  1. Click on the "RESERVATION APPLICATION" button at the end of this page and fill in the requested data.
  2. Upon receipt of your Reservation Application, we will check your credit card.
  3. Your request will be transmitted to your selected Ducati Dealer.
  4. The selected Ducati Dealer will then transmit the acceptance or non-acceptance of your Reservation Application.
  5. As soon as we receive both your confirmation of your Reservation Application and the selected Ducati Dealer acceptance, we will charge 2000 (two thousand) EURO (or its equivalent in your local currency). At this point you will receive a final message confirming the success of the process and that you will soon receive your 996R.
  6. From this point forward, communications about your delivery status and final delivered price will be exclusively between you and your selected Ducati Dealer.
3) The 996R Reservation Application Form
Your Reservation Application begins with the submission of a completed 996R Reservation Form. This means that you have to complete the first part of the Reservation Application form with your personal data and the second part of it with your credit card and the selected dealer data. The 996R Reservation Application form must have all the requested information completed.
- Your personal information (first part of the Reservation Application)
This section contains your name and address, but most important your E-mail address. Your E-mail address will be used to confirm the receipt of your Reservation Application, to communicate updates about the status of your Reservation Application, to let you see yourself in the Owner's Registry if your Reservation Application is successful and to inform you of any additional information that may be required. Please remember that the username ("Alias" in the form), and which you have to choose in order to submit Reservation Application form, must be unique and is limited to six characters. Therefore you should try to choose something uncommon. When you submit a reservation, if someone else has used the nickname chosen, you will be alerted and asked to select an alternative. Profane or derogatory selections will result in rejection of the Reservation Application.
- Selected Ducati Dealer and Credit Card information (second part of the Reservation Application form)
In this section you have to select your preferred Ducati Dealer that will deliver your 996R and you have to fill in your credit card data. Your contract of sale will be signed directly with the selected Ducati Dealer after your 996R has been received by the selected Ducati Dealer and when final payment will be made. Also, all communications about the status of your 996R will be with your selected Ducati Dealer.
In this section there is a Dealer Locator that will allow you to find your closest or preferred Ducati Dealer's name, address and phone numbers.
Remember that a sum of 2000 (two thousand) EURO is required when the selected Ducati Dealer has accepted your Reservation Application. This sum will be deducted from the final delivered price of your 996R.
Only following credit cards will be accepted. Please ensure that the credit card numbers and expiration date are accurate and that required funds are available. Please be informed that, in order to check your credit card availability, we will debit your credit card with the sum of 15 EURO and than credit it with the same sum.

4) The 996R Owner's Registry
The 996R Owner's Registry will appear on the 996R page of the Ducati web site at www.ducati.com. The Owner's Registry is a list of all customers who have submitted the Reservation Application form correctly. The status of the Reservation Application on the Owner's Registry will be one of the following:
- ACCEPTED - this indicates that your Reservation Application has been accepted, and that Ducati has made a charge to your credit card for the sum of 2000 (two thousand) EURO. Your Reservation Application has been successfully processed and your bike will be sent to your selected Ducati Dealer, or
- PENDING - this indicates that your Reservation Application has been accepted, but that we are awaiting either your confirmation, or the acceptance of your request by your selected Ducati Dealer.
The Owner's Registry will show your pseudonym or nickname, city and country. This lists the geographical location of your fellow 996R owners.

5) Terms of agreement
This is a link where you will find a document containing the Terms and Conditions of the Reservation Application agreement. Before submitting your Reservation Application form, you must confirm that you have read and agreed to the Terms and Conditions by clicking on the "I agree" button at the end of the document. If you do not agree with any part of these Terms and Conditions, you must not submit the Reservation Application form.

6) Confirming the receipt of your Reservation Application form, and checking its status After submitting the first part of the Reservation Application form with your personal data (see the paragraph N. 3: The 966R Reservation Form) you will receive, via e-mail, a confirmation message with a Personal Identification Number (PIN).
When you have completed the second part of the Reservation Application giving credit card and selected Ducati Dealer data, you will receive a second e-mail with the confirmation message. You will be required to reply to this second message in order to confirm your Reservation Application. At this point, when you have finished the entire Reservation Application process, you can use your e-mail address and your PIN to check the status of your application, writing them in a special area of ducati.com (Owner's Registry).

IF YOU DO NOT RECEIVE THE TWO CONFIRMATION MESSAGES WITHIN TWO DAYS, IT MEANS THAT THE RESERVATION APPLICATION PROCESS HAS FOR SOME REASON NOT BEEN COMPLETED. IN THIS CASE YOU MUST RESUBMIT YOUR RESERVATION APPLICATION FORM.

7) Notes about the Reservation Application process:
  • If your credit card number is invalid or your credit card issuer declines the charge, your Reservation Application will not be processed and you will need to reapply.
  • If the selected Ducati Dealer does not accept your application, your Reservation Application form will remain valid, but you will be required by Ducati Customer service to select an alternative dealer.
8) The manufacturing and delivery process
The 996R is a limited edition motorcycle. The delivery of the bikes will start in February.
PLEASE BE ADVISED THAT IF YOU ORDER MORE THAN ONE BIKE, WE CANNOT GUARANTEE THE AVAILABILITY OF ANY ADDITIONAL BIKE.
Please check the status of your Reservation Application on the Owner' s Registry that has to be "ACCEPTED" in order to assure you that your Reservation Application has been successful. When your 996R will be available at your selected Ducati Dealer, you will agree with your selected Ducati dealer on the contract of sale that will specify the final delivered price and the conditions of delivery. The final delivered price also varies by country and region due to national and local taxes, shipping fees, set-up charges, insurance, registration and other fees. Not all these fees are applied in every country. The 26000 (twenty-six thousand) EURO price is the suggested Key-in-Hand pre-luxury tax price in Europe and the suggested Pre-tax price in the rest of the world. Your selected Ducati Dealer will apply the sum of 2000 (two thousand) EURO, or equivalent in your local currency, to the invoice.

The World of Ducati
No doubt there will not be enough 996R's to go around, but we hope that your are one of the lucky few to secure one of your very own.
You and your selected Ducati Dealer are both dedicated Ducati enthusiasts with one goal in mind enjoying the Ducati experience. With your confirmation you become a member of an exciting and unique world, the world of Ducati.

ONLINE ORDERING

The 996R was only the 2nd ever Ducati offered for sale via the internet. The first had been the 2000 MH900 Evolution.

Starting on the morning of September 12th, 2000 at 9AM, Ducati began taking online deposits of €2000 Euros (or its equivalent in your local currency) and allowing the buyer to nominate a dealers for completing the transaction. All available pre-order allocations sold out within the day, some say in just hours.

The total number of allocations Ducati allowed for online ordering was between 373 and 375 units [7] . The remaining 325 units were made available via dealers starting January 1st, 2001.

Total (2001) price was:

GBP £17.000 | EUR €26.000

Inflation adjusted prices (2023):

GBP £30.375 | EUR €41.647

PRE-DELIVERY INSPECTION (PDI)

Upon receipt of the bikes from the factory, it was the dealers job to A) assemble the bike (per the white assembly booklet included) and B) conduct a Pre-Delivery Inspection (PDI). The PDI meant adding fuel to start the bike, checking everything over for safety, and performing a road test. Ducati required this for the warranty period to begin and be valid. It was only after the PDI that the dealer would provide a warranty and service booklet. Buyers were also presented with the PDI sheet from the dealership. In 2001 this was a carbon triplicate form completed by hand and stamped by the dealership containing the PDI checklist on the bottom half.

Many items were checked over during the PDI such as inspection all fasteners for proper torque marking, fully charging the battery, removing all stickers and tags, wiping the protective oil off the brake discs, adjusting/lubricating the chain as necessary, tyre pressure, checking the function of all components for proper operation, etc. It serviced as a final QC to ensure each bike is delivered to the customer in the best condition possible. Sometimes paintwork needed to be touched up or corrected as well.

At this point, most dealerships handled collection of local taxes and registration fees ensuring the bike was legally registered for customer pickup. It should be noted that in some countries it may been law that a PDI must be completed prior to handing over a vehicle to a customer for road safety reasons. In late 2001, a TSB was sent to dealers asking them to ensure they are doing a concise job of the PDI checklist and suggested putting up to several miles on the bike during the road test.

SHIPPING CRATES VS. STILLAGE

In 2001 these were delivered to the Europe and the UK via stillage on lorries as Ducati Europe was having a push on bring green. Only bikes going outside of these markets were packaged into wooden crates for transport to the dealers via shipping containers.

The bikes left the factory on temporary steel pallets, loaded into lorries, and transported to a company called SIMA in Modena. There depending on the destination market, the bike would be packed onto either delivery stillage racks or into a wooden crate. [11] There was a large decal on the right headlight indicating the destination country. Wooden crate delivered bikes needed their handle bar clip-ons re-positioned vs. stillage delivery that did not.
